Le Mans 2022 Ayse's Story

Page 21 - Sunday 12th June - Indianapolis (Eventually!)

If I'm honest, I don't really know what time we left T17 to head back to the car.  All I know is that my last photo in T17 was taken a few minutes before midnight and my first video at Indianapolis is time-stamped at 1.15 am.   However I think that timing is probably an hour out and it was in fact 2.15 am.  We made our way quickly to the car but noticed that the traffic behind the stands was pretty heavy.  This wasn't all that unusual.  But we then had to queue for an age to drive the wrong way out of parking blanc as it appeared that the shuttle coaches were using the front of blanc for reasons that defied any understanding.  Having finally got out onto the road we hoped that the journey of less than a quarter of a mile down to the roundabout out to Arnage and Mulsanne would be quicker.  It wasn't.  Not only that but we found ourselves queueing behind a brainless muppet who just revved his engine constantly for no reason whatsoever.  It must have taken us another half an hour to get to the roundabout at which point I assumed that we would start to make some quicker progress.  Wrong again.  We crawled literally all the way to the Arnage car park.  Fortunately after such a tortuous journey we got easily into the first car park and parked up.  Then we had to extract everything that we would need from the boot in near darkness - chairs, coats, a thick jumper for me, plus woolly hats and gloves as by now it had got pretty chilly - as it invariably does on race night.

It was still very busy at both Arnage and Indianapolis and we were also disappointed to find that the eateries there were closed too.  In all my years going out there on race night I had never known this before.  We had to go well along the Indianapolis spectator bank to find a spot where we could set up our chairs.  Tony and Tim had 'enjoyed' the same journey out to Arnage a little behind us and joined us on the banking.

As before, although I was completely unaware of it at the time, the videos I was shooting were of really poor quality.  Very disappointing, but they're worth including both for completeness and that sublime sound of Le Mans at night...

I took my last shot at Indianapolis at around 2.30 am but my last piece of video at nearer 3.40 am.  I'm pretty sure that by that time I had tired of taking both photographs and video.  Looking back, I always regret not taking more video!
