Le Mans 2000 Ayse's Story

Page 11 - Sunday 18th June - The Dark, Dark Night....

Having concluded our repast it was decision time for those who wanted to return to the circuit.  I was itching to get back of course, having missed several hours already.  It was no surprise that those who had left the circuit early all elected to stay at the hotel to sleep through the Le Mans night.  Sacrilege!  So Ian, Martyn, Robert and Peter joined me for the journey back in Robert's hire car.

We arrived on the Mulsanne at the Hunaudières restaurant and then made our way on to Mulsanne Corner where (after a few wrong turns) we arrived at 1.00 am.  We then discovered that Peter had left his ticket back at the hotel!  But we somehow managed to get him in.  We spent about 20 minutes watch from there before heading off to the main circuit where Robert kindly dropped me off for my solo night stint at the Tertre Rouge entrance.  They then headed back for some sleep.  Strangely, looking back, I didn't take any photographs at all at the restaurant or at Mulsanne Corner, although I do seem to have had a fascination with the big wheel.....

After fourteen years of previous experience I knew well how quickly the night goes at Le Mans.  You only have something like 6 hours of darkness to enjoy and with dawn at around 5 am, I knew I needed to move on.  So at 3 am I left Tertre Rouge and went back through the underpass and made my way up towards the Village.
